How To Ship Perfect Pies & Cakes

When baking a pie or cake that you'd like to ship to someone out of town, bake your pie or cake in a foil pie or cake pan that comes with a plastic domed lid. After your pie or unfrosted cake has cooled, cover with plastic wrap and freeze. (note: when shipping cakes it is best to ship them unfrosted. I pack an 8 oz. jar of frosting in the box and my loved ones frost the cake when it arrives.) The next day remove it from the freezer and follow these simple steps:Step 1
Assemble the following items:
frozen pie or unfrosted cake & frosting in an 8 oz. jar
plastic domed lid
packing material such as, newspaper, shredded paper or foam peanuts
box large enough for pie or cake pan
packing tape
address label

Step 2
Place packing material on top of plastic covered pie or cake.

Step 3
Using packing tape, affix the plastic domed lid over the packing material. This will keep the pie or cake from shifting during shipping.


Step 3
Place the pie or cake in a box and stuff with additional packing material.



Step 4
Using packing tape, secure the box closed and attach the address label.

Step 5
Immediately go to mailing center and ship via next day delivery. (note: if your loved one lives in a very small town, 2 day delivery will also work well.)
Pies that ship well include fruit pies with a double crust, thick custard pies such as pumpkin and pecan. Cream pies and meringue pies DO NOT ship well.

  6. I love this!! I have been searching for this information for a while. A question for you... Can I find shipping prices online at UPS, FedEx, DHL, USPS to ship food items or does the shipping price differ by how many pounds the item weighs or if I want to ship overnight vs. 2 day?

    Since I generally ship perishables via overnight or next day, I've found that shipping costs vary by the weight, demensions of the box AND the recepeint's zip code.

  9. Thanks for this info; this will help tremendously. I have another question though, and please forgive my knuckleheadedness! What instructions do I give to the recipient of the pie? The sweet potato pie will already be fully cooked; so do I tell them to let it defrost in the fridge? Defrost at room temperature? Can't nuke it because it is in an aluminum pan ... sticking it in the oven would mess it up and burn the crust! So what do I tell them to do? I'm just stumped ... help me please!!! Thank you!!!

  15. This sounds like a good way to pack and mail pies but I have an additional question. My friend from England wants to taste traditional pecan pie. I want to surprise her and make one made from my grandma's recipe and send it. If I freeze it as you say above, do you think it would arrive okay?

    Thanks for visiting my blog. Regarding your question about shipping the frozen pecan pie to England ... Hmmm, I'm not sure how long that would take. If the pie would arrive within 4-5 days it should ship just find. However, if it took longer than that, I would become nervous.

    mrboxonline.com sells insulated shipping boxes that would most likely be your best choice for shipping frozen food products overseas. I would expect one of these insulated boxes to extend the shipping time past the 4-5 days mentioned above, thus keeping the pie from spoiling during a longer shipping period to England.

    I hope you are successful with your pie making and I am confident your friend will LOVE a traditional southern pecan pie!

  17. Thanks for the info on shipping pies!�� I also have a question about homemade jams. Do you process your jams, jellies and preserves after cooking and filling jars? My grandma did not but the Ball canning book says to process them. I've heard of pouring on melted wax or simply turning the jars upside down. TIA

      I am glad my shipping method will be useful to you. Regarding your question about processing jams and jellies; Yes, I do process all my jams and jellies in a boiling water bath for 20 minutes after filling my jars.
      Decades ago our medical research was not as advanced as it is today regarding bacteria levels in foods, thus our ancestors used preservation methods that are not as safe and our modern preservation methods. I always encourage home cooks and gardeners to follow the most up to date preservation methods to avoid any food poisoning or botulism contamination. Please note, if not treated quickly botulism poisoning is fatal.

      Yes, I've shipped both, pumpkin and double crust apple pies via over night and two day mail. Please remember to freeze your pies prior to shipping. Wrapping the the foil pie tins with cling wrap BEFORE topping with packing material and the domed lid has always kept my pies in perfect condition during shipping. I also use a lot of packing material around the pie in the box so the pie can not shift while in transit.

      I believe this shipping method would work for cheesecakes because I have ordered many, many cheesecakes from Juniors cheesecakes in New York and they always ship them frozen & very well packed. NOTE: Any frozen cheesecake MUST be thawed in the refrigerator ... PLEASE do not thaw a cheesecake at room temperature (unless you want a gooey middle).

  24. I'm shipping pumpkin tarts to Maryland for a friend. I know they need to be frozen, but do I need to dry ice the package?

    1. If you ship your pies / tarts over-night or 2 day mail; No you do not have to dry ice the package. However, if the shipping will take longer than a total of 2 days, yes they should have dry ice packed in the box.
